i came because of the martin luther king school. i live up the street from that school and was headed here for the press conference which happened to be on his birthday, actual birthday. passed by that school and heard on the loud speaker a female voice coming over the pa system telling the students "we're going to have a march to commemorate martin luther king a birthday. wear your white t shirts. that is going to signify peace and justice" and i thought, well, hey i'm going down to the board of education to a demonstration about tobias, this good worker who put his all into the students at the school and this principal that pit this child down. i couldn't wrap my mind around that. here she is on the loud speaker talking about peace and justice and wearing white t shirts but i'm taking my retirement time because i'm retired to head down to demonstrate against someone like that. it just didn't fit. now, i am wearing this t shirt "stop the killing. start the healing" , a campaign we had in the 80's. it started in the 80's with ben ve

when did you first get to be interested in martin luther king? >> guest: when i was in high school as a young fellow growing up in atlanta georgia my parents didn't have an answer. it became kind of a quest to find out about it in the sense that there was enormous power and that would change the direction of my life. when i wasn't looking for it to happen. c-span: how many of your years did you think about this? >> guest: i started after i got into a book career in the late 70's after magazine journalism. i wanted to write about this period because i hadn't answered the question what is it made of and i thought in 1981 with what was proposed to be a three year history of the teen years and it's now been 16 years and i've done it in two volumes is now projected to be a trilogy or will be a trilogy after i finish it but i would have 20 years. definitely turning into my life work but i'm thankful for the privilege of it. c-span: the first book, parting the waters, 1,056 pages. this but there are 546 pages. what's been your approach? >> guest: to do

there was no physical abuse and bullying of students at martin luther king. well, i would say there was a thorough investigation and the staff involved in that incident haven't been interviewed bit management at the school district. so what kind of thorough investigation was done by school district about the bullying of students at martin luther king school? furthermore we just heard about the charter school and want a music room bechtel and the program are involve in san francisco as are other privatization companis who want to privatize the schools and drive the schools towards core standards. i would argue that is for the destruction of education. it's not the advance of students of san francisco and the students of this country. core standards are being used not to provide more teaching, more education, but to drive more testing and to drive really the students out and further privatization of the school. another issue was a video done of this incident at the school. there was a video done of the physical abuse of the student at the school and apparently

martin luther king. we understand he is going to take a moment there to honor him, to reflect, and to think about him and this day, which is, you know, honoring him, martin luther king, as well as the president, of course, since his inauguration. he is going to do that before he takes after. one other interesting tidbit i wanted to give you when talking about the lunch. that is this is a big ceremony. but it's also an important day in history that there are people here who spent a lot of time trying to preserve it. and four years ago, that included saving the actual plate that the predent -- the whose place setting actually that the president ate from. unclear if they're going to do it the second time. but that is the kind of detail that they do right after everybody clears out of there. they take everything, they save it, because they understand the curator told me, 200 years from now they want to make sure that these things are preserved for history and for the future. >> i hope they have a really, rea
